Cloudflare Zero Trust is Cloudflare's secure access service edge platform, delivered from its global network rather than from appliances or a customer's own data centre. It replaces the traditional corporate VPN with per-application, identity-aware access, adds outbound web filtering for the same users, and provides a connector that exposes internal services without opening inbound firewall ports. It serves IT and security teams at companies of every size, from a startup of ten people who need a way into an admin panel, through mid-sized firms replacing legacy VPN concentrators, to enterprises consolidating remote access and secure web gateway functions onto a single vendor.
Cloudflare Access is the zero trust network access component. Instead of putting an application behind a network perimeter, an administrator defines a policy for a specific hostname or path and Cloudflare evaluates every request against it before allowing the session through. Policies combine identity from an external provider, group membership, country of origin, device posture state, authentication method and risk signals, and the outcome can be allow, block, prompt for a second factor, isolate the session in a remote browser, or require a service token. Clientless browser access lets a user reach an internal dashboard from any machine without installing software, which is the practical advantage over a conventional VPN for contractors and support staff.
Identity integration is broad. Access connects to Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Ping Identity, JumpCloud and any provider that speaks SAML or OpenID Connect, and can also authenticate users with a one-time PIN emailed or texted to an address, which suits small teams with no identity provider at all. SCIM provisioning syncs users and groups so that deprovisioning in the directory revokes access, closing the most common gap in VPN estates where former employees keep working tunnels. Service tokens and mutually authenticated TLS cover machine-to-machine traffic with no human identity attached.
Cloudflare Gateway is the secure web gateway. It filters DNS and HTTP traffic for enrolled users and locations by category, domain, file type, user, device posture and time. It blocks malware and phishing domains, enforces safe search, restricts newly registered domains, inspects TLS where policy requires it by deploying a Cloudflare certificate to endpoints, and prevents data loss through rules matching patterns, keywords and file types in uploads. In-line CASB checks SaaS applications for misconfiguration as traffic passes, and remote browser isolation runs high-risk sessions in a container in Cloudflare's network so nothing lands on the endpoint.
Cloudflare Tunnel removes inbound exposure. A small connector, cloudflared, runs inside the private network and establishes an outbound-only connection to Cloudflare. No inbound firewall rules, port forwarding or public IP are required, and because the connector originates traffic outward, the attack surface presented to the internet is effectively nothing beyond the policy layer in front of it. Tunnels route traffic to internal services by hostname, support TCP and UDP for SSH, RDP and arbitrary protocols, and can run as a redundant pair for high availability. Access for Infrastructure extends the idea to privileged operations by issuing short-lived certificates for SSH and RDP sessions instead of distributing standing keys.
Device posture and the WARP client tie the pieces together. The client enrols a device, applies split or full tunnel routing, and reports posture state so policies can require disk encryption, a supported operating system version, an active firewall, a client certificate, or a signal from an endpoint detection or mobile device management product. Digital Experience Monitoring adds fleet visibility into client crashes, connectivity problems and path latency, turning the complaint that the VPN is slow into data. Admin actions, authentication decisions and policy evaluations are logged and can stream to a SIEM or object storage through Logpush.
Compared with competitors, the structural advantage is that Zero Trust runs on a network Cloudflare already operates. Zscaler and Netskope are the enterprise incumbents in secure web gateway and zero trust access, with deep data loss prevention and inspection and a sales motion aimed at large organisations. Prisma Access from Palo Alto Networks, Cisco and Fortinet bundle SASE with their firewall franchises. Twingate competes on the same application-access idea with a lighter client, Tailscale on mesh networking for small teams. Cloudflare's differences are the free tier, the absence of hardware, the ability for the same vendor to front applications with its CDN and WAF so a hostname is simultaneously protected and published, and pricing per user rather than per bandwidth tier.
Pricing is the clearest differentiator. The Free plan covers up to fifty users and includes Access, Gateway, Tunnel, the WARP client, device posture checks, data loss prevention and CASB capability, which is enough to secure an entire small company at no cost and is unusual in this category. The Standard plan has been priced at seven dollars per user per month and adds higher limits, additional posture integrations, longer log retention and more policy capacity. Enterprise is negotiated and adds support commitments, advanced features and custom retention terms. Remote browser isolation and some premium modules have historically been add-ons above the base plan, and Cloudflare revises plan contents periodically, so current inclusions should be confirmed on their pricing page.
Limitations are real. The fifty-user free cap is a cliff for a company that grows to fifty-one. Full TLS inspection requires deploying a Cloudflare certificate to endpoints, with the usual trust work, and can break certificate-pinned applications. Remote browser isolation, Digital Experience Monitoring and premium data loss prevention raise the effective cost above the headline number. Posture checks depend on integrations with specific endpoint and MDM vendors, so coverage needs verifying against an actual fleet. Everything routes through Cloudflare's network, which for most locations is faster than a legacy VPN but makes the vendor a single point of dependency, and organisations with strict data residency or air-gapped environments will find the model a poor fit. It is also an access and filtering platform rather than a replacement for branch firewall hardware.
It fits remote-first and hybrid companies replacing VPN hardware, startups that can live inside the free tier while getting real security, organisations consolidating secure web gateway and zero trust access onto one vendor, and engineering teams that need to expose internal services without opening inbound ports. It does not fit air-gapped environments that cannot route traffic through a third party, estates that are entirely on-premises with no remote access requirement, or procurement processes that demand an appliance and a hardware refresh cycle.
Against alternatives, the decision comes down to scale and existing footprint. A team under fifty users gets a production-grade zero trust deployment for nothing, which neither Zscaler nor Netskope matches. A mid-sized company already using Cloudflare for DNS, CDN or WAF gets one vendor, one policy surface and one bill. A large enterprise with entrenched data loss prevention requirements and an existing Cisco or Palo Alto estate will find comparable capability in the incumbents and will negotiate on support, residency and integration depth rather than price. Cloudflare Zero Trust wins on cost, deployment speed and network position, and is the default recommendation where the problem is remote access rather than deep content inspection.
